This past week 15 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 20 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include Amazon SES, ESPN, Geoportail, Readability , Readmill, ReadSocial and Topsy. The most often used APIs this week are Facebook, Google Maps and Twitter. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Social (6 APIs, 10 mashups), Mapping (3 APIs, 7 mashups) and Music (1 APIs, 1 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:
Our API directory now includes 112 advertising APIs. The newest is the TagLabs ActiveTag API. The most popular, in terms of mashups, is the Google AdSense API. We list 74 Google AdSense mashups. Below you’ll find some more stats from the directory, including the entire list of advertising APIs.
Librato hits the sweet spot for late adopters. Developers that are not willing to host their systems in the cloud, but need to implement reliable, automatic scaling should find Librato to be a realistic way forward. It allows for existing applications to be wrapped in “containers” and “templates” which transform them into monitored processes that produce performance metrics. Now with the Librato APIs, developers can now fully manage their process configuration set programatically. This company makes a serious offering to the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) space with technology driven on an excellent strategy and backed by 12 million in funding.
Proving to be too popular, the Google Translate API will be discontinued December 1 due to what the company characterizes as “extensive abuse.” Effective immediately, rate limits will be greatly reduced. The search giant announced plans to shutter a dozen APIs in all, though most were older and less used than Translate.
Major U.S. music festival Lollapalooza is catering to hackers with its new Lollapalooza API and a contest.
