This past week 11 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 30 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include Aviary Web, CartoDB, Google Street View Image, Magento and Webcams.travel. The most often used APIs this week are Bing Maps, Facebook and Freebase. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Mapping (5 APIs, 7 mashups), Social (4 APIs, 5 mashups) and Photos (4 APIs, 4 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:
With the calendar turning to June, we’ll take the opportunity to look back at some of our Mashup of the Day selections for May that haven’t yet been covered. These mashups make use of APIs from Amazon, Google Maps, New York Times and Facebook.
This week we had 71 new APIs added to our API directory including a social eCommerce platform, optical character recognition service, location information services, web marketing services and a mobile printing app. In addition we covered Involver’s launch of a groundbreaking social advertising optimization API. Below are more details on each of these new APIs.
American Express found another way to convert social media to cardholder transactions at the SXSW conference using the still-private Smart Offer API. Amex’s “Sync. Tweet. Save.” social marketing promotion positions the credit card for the social media generation beyond membership points.
Web APIs represent one of the biggest technology trends of recent years, by leveraging the simple technologies of the Web (REST, JSON, HTTP) for application integration. Although Web APIs are quite simple, organizations have realized that if they expose data in this easy way, they enable an array of mobile apps to be written to consume them. Examples of APIs include simple ways to query company stock information from brokerages, to retrieve flight information from airlines, and to retrieve shipping information from freight companies. In each case, it is simply Web technologies which are used. This is a great use of the language of the Web to address an older problem: data integration.
This week we had 68 new APIs added to our API directory including a microvolunteering platform, a mobile application positioning service, a phone call demographic data service, a service for accessing small business content, a restaurant menu sharing service and a calling, VoIP, and messaging service. In addition we covered a recent transit hackathon in Philadelphia.

We also reviewed the suite of Salesforce.com APIs, covered a public bathroom location service and InfoChimps’ latest bundle of Geo APIs. Below are more details on each of these new APIs.
