Our API directory now includes 160 music APIs. The newest is the Spotify Apps API. The most popular, in terms of mashups, is the Last.fm API. We list 206 Last.fm mashups. Below you’ll find some more stats from the directory, including the entire list of music APIs.
2011 was another great year for mashups. At ProgrammableWeb we saw over 900 new mashups added to our directory. Popular app categories such as mapping, search and shopping continued to lead the way. This year however saw social apps continue their rapid growth from the last couple of years. As 2011 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the best and most popular mashups that were submitted.
This week we had 70 new APIs added to our API directory including an audio fingerprinting service, sentiment analysis and analytics service, affiliate marketing network, mobile app sales tracking service, visual search service and an eCommerce service. In addition we covered a “mobile engagement” platform adding revenue analytics to their service. Below are more details on each of these new APIs.
When looking at the tags associated with the mashups that are submitted to our directory; the most popular ones have always been mapping, social and search. In recent months that trend has continued and today we look at a mashup type that is nearly as popular but doesn’t seem to get as much coverage; the video mashup. These recent Mashup of the Day selections all incorporate video, specifically the YouTube API.
This past week 26 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 23 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include Australian Business Number Lookup, Bandcamp, Beatport, Checkvist, Dance-Tunes, Medianet Open MP3, Mendeley, New York Times Movie Reviews and PLoS Search. The most often used APIs this week are Twilio, Twilio SMS and Twitter. The semantic text mining Alchemy API is now a member of the API Billionaires Club. The service, which makes sense of raw unstructured data, averages 65-75 million requests per day, according to Alchemy’s Elliot Turner. That brings the monthly count above 2 billion API requests.
