Startups need to build quickly and iterate quicker. That means not re-inventing the wheel — whenever possible. Just 5 years ago, people were asking why would you use an API? This has quickly turned to why wouldn’t you! Since March 2007 there are 14 times as many APIs listed on the ProgrammableWeb site. And the growth rate is accelerating. API listings on ProgrammableWeb have exploded this year so far, doubling the same period last year, and about four times the same period in 2010 (see chart below).

But what if we turn this equation on its head and instead say that you could actually be more productive while using your email application. PowerInbox strongly believes that and gives developers the tools to accomplish this through its platform and the PowerInbox API.

I saw a new acronym the other day, “SoLoMoClo,” which stands for Social, Local, Mobile, Cloud. The reason people are focused on these four categories are the multi-billion dollar ecosystems created by Facebook and Twitter in Social, Groupon in Local, iOS (Apple) and Android (Google) in Mobile, and Amazon and Salesforce in Cloud. I think we’ve only scraped the tip of the iceberg in these categories, and that a number of SoLoMoClo companies will break out in 2012.
This week we had 70 new APIs added to our API directory including an audio fingerprinting service, sentiment analysis and analytics service, affiliate marketing network, mobile app sales tracking service, visual search service and an eCommerce service.
