This past week 14 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 23 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include 8coupons, AddThis Analytics , Education.com, iFixit, KooKoo, Sears and Wordstream Keyword Tool. The most often used APIs this week are 8coupons, Google Maps and Twilio. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Shopping (5 APIs, 6 mashups), Mapping (3 APIs, 5 mashups) and Telephony (2 APIs, 4 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:
The race to deliver the best deals of the neighbourhood to you has been intense over the last year. 8coupons is a coupon aggregator that allows users to access thousands of deals. The company released a new version of the 8coupons API with higher rate limits and new ways to access more data.
The daily deal space is hot, and has been for some time now. In the past year 23 million Americans have purchased a daily deal or group coupon according to a survey conducted for the American Institute of CPAs by Harris Interactive (source). Not to mention Freelance websites, such as Freelancer and Elance, have been flooded with thousands of “Groupon clone”, “daily deal site” and related job postings – a general sign that many more businesses are still trying to get in.
While the market seems obsessed with Groupon, other leading deal aggregators are working their way to impressive number of deals offered, subscribers, developer mindshare and big partnerships. Dealmap, the coupon aggregator, has just announced a big partnership deal with Microsoft Bing, where its Dealmap API will be used to publish local and daily deal content to consumers via Bing on the web and mobile Bing offerings.
Deal and Coupon sites have garnered a lot of attention this year. Groupon, the most popular of them, has been in the news plenty due to rumors about Google showing an interest for them. Is there any chance for you as a developer to get access to huge dataset of deals and coupons, possibly containing Groupon deals to and offer it to users of your application? 8coupons.com definitely thinks so and it has launched the 8coupons API for exactly that purpose.
Already this week we had 17 new APIs added to our API directory including a Twitter utility, mobile tagging service, an SMS messaging service, local deals aggregator, cloud infrastructure management service, journal search service and multi-party video chat service. Below is more detail on each of these new APIs.
