The REST-based weather-API.net comes in server-based and Javascript flavors with JSON responses and XML available as well. U.S.-based Weather-API.net has 53 years of historical data in the U.S., nearly 2 billion data points.
Developed in partnership with the National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources (NeCTAR) project, the SOAP-based Australian Synchrotron APIs are geared to let scientists access data on their experiments from Australia’s Synchrotron, the nation’s largest research facility, in a secure manner. This also permits data analysis through remote access.
A team at Indiana University created Scholarometer to “facilitate citation analysis and help evaluate the impact of an author’s publications.” The crowdsourced data created through the Scholarometer platform is available through the Scholarometer API that allows developers to track certain authors through name, citation, disciplines, relevance, and other metrics.
The ProPublica Forensics API allows access to data from Propublica’s investigation into the quality of autopsies across America. The API provides “state and county-level data about coroner and medical examiner systems in the United States.” The RESTful API is available in JSON, XML and JSON-P formats. An astounding variety of data are available, from the ratio of autopsies to what is expected, to the number of uncertified pathologists working in a state or county system, and on and on.
Swellcast combines all weather data needed to forecast surf conditions for surfers around Australia, and consolidates the data into a user friendly interface that takes the complexity out of understanding when and where the next big wave will appear. Swellcast also offers the forecast data and surf conditions through the Swellcast API.
The Integrated Earth Data Applications are accessible through a variety of APIs and clients, including REST, SOAP, an Open Geospacial Consortium, and an “Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvest.” These can be used to create maps, visualize data, plot sample positions and create customized data compilations. Funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF), the IEDA provides “data services for observational solid earth data from the Ocean, Earth, and Polar Sciences” to support the work of the geosciences community.
The API for the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology’s (IRIS) Seismographs in Schools Program returns XML. It retrieves stations, station information, events, event information, and networks affiliated with IRIS.
The Illumina Basepace API is a key stepping stone to simplifying genomics software development by third parties with a platform as a service. The API allows you to build for any platform, web, desktop, or “Native apps.” Illumina offers whole-genome sequencing, individual genome sequencing, and with Basespace offers processing, storage and apps sold by third party vendors.
