In 2011, the Guardian launched its local messaging bulletin: n0tice. Although the platform encouraged open journalism, the Guardian has expanded the effort with the launch the n0tice API last week. The very premise of n0tice offers value from a locality perspective. With the open API, the value of the local bulletin can be integrated with any developer’s application.
Our API directory now includes 81 news APIs. The newest is the New York Times Events API. The most popular, in terms of mashups, is the Digg API. We list 69 Digg mashups. Below you’ll find some more stats from the directory, including the entire list of news APIs.
n0tice is a simple location based public notice board system. It’s completely open and unfiltered, and allows users to post any sort of notice they want, tagged with their location, and lets them read notices near them, sorted by distance. Quite a simple little idea, and if it gets a user base, it could end up being quite useful. Although first designed for iPhone, the n0tice API was quickly released to allow integration into other programs, including desktop apps.
This week we had 45 new APIs added to our API directory including a URL shortening tool, website speed scorer, personal task list service, electric vehicle charging point database, realtime mapping service, bug tracking software, code review tool and website owner verification service.
