Sure, YouTube gets all the press. And YouTube gets most of the mashups. But when it comes to video APIs, there’s a lot more than just YouTube. In fact, there are 100 video APIs, from live content Ustream to micro-vlogging 12 seconds.
Last.fm besides being one of the most popular online radio and music communities, also has one of the most popular online music APIs. Possibly the most popular. Each month we continue to see a variety of new music-themed mashups added to our directory built on the Last.fm API. In the first three weeks of this month alone there have been 5 more Last.fm mashups added. That means that out of 231 music mashups at least 84 use the Last.fm API. And not that developers don’t have other options given that there are 44 music APIs to choose from.
ffwd is an online community that lets members discover new videos selected based on their interests and favorite shows, and share videos with friends. The “ffwd” button lets you “fast-forward” to the next video in the sequence if you’ve seen enough of the current video — kind of like “channel” surfing, buy on the Net. ffwd have now released an API to let developers build ffwd applications on any web-enabled video device. The world of video APIs continues its impressive surge, with 40 APIS now listed on ProgrammableWeb, up from the 30 video APIs profiled in February and more than double the 19 video APIs from last fall. And more video mashups appear every week, now with 340 video mashups listed.
As we reported not long ago we’re seeing lots of growth in the number of video APIs, and the past week has been no exception.
