This past week 8 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 15 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include Apicultur Word Lemmatizer, Blekko, HAMweather Aeris, Handset Detection and Tesco. The most often used APIs this week are Reddit and Twitter. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Social (5 APIs, 6 mashups), Shopping (2 APIs, 2 mashups) and News (1 APIs, 1 mashups).
Our API directory now includes 945 social APIs. The newest is the SmartBots API. The most popular, in terms of mashups, is the Twitter API. We list [num] Twitter mashups. Below you’ll find some more stats from the directory, including the entire list of social APIs.

After our recent look at the growth of social APIs, we thought we’d look back at the history of the category. We added the Plazes API in September, 2005. In terms of the web, this is recent history. In terms of APIs, we might as well be looking at scrolls. In fact, less than half of the first 10 social APIs are still alive today. Below you’ll find a list of those trailblazing 10, along with a status for each of them.
