Two months ago I was looking for a side project to spend my time on keeping the saw sharp. I noticed there was no central place to find jobs related to my favorite technology: APIs. There were a lot of API-focused companies out there looking to hire, and a lot of companies looking to hire people specifically to work on API integrations, but no central place to connect employers with candidates that shared their passion for all things HTTP. I found a suitable domain and two months later, API Jobs was born.
We have seen an explosion in the number of APIs that are now available to developers. It seems like almost everyone has one and those that don’t are scrambling to get one. The focus now is clearly not on just having an API, but having a “great API.” Two excellent presentations from Cloudstock, held earlier this month, give you an overview on the current state of the API market and tips on what makes a great API.
Transloadit offers media upload, modification, and storage as a service for developers who need that functionality (or, as Transloadit’s homepage puts it, “geeks who run web or mobile applications”) but don’t want to worry about it themselves. There aren’t too many moving parts to it, but they’re ones a lot of applications make use of. The Transloadit API’s main functions include: file upload, image resizing, video file encoding, image thumbnail creations, and file storage on Amazon S3.
Sure, YouTube gets all the press. And YouTube gets most of the mashups. But when it comes to video APIs, there’s a lot more than just YouTube. In fact, there are 100 video APIs, from live content Ustream to micro-vlogging 12 seconds.
When it comes to video (and audio), it seems every device uses its own special format. There is a good chance the format used by your camera can’t just be copied to a web site and viewed as is. The process of converting between formats is known as transcoding. It is a CPU intensive job, and with hundreds of formats to choose from presents developers with a significant challenge. Zencoder is a new web service that is looking to provide a solution.
