Our API directory now includes 945 social APIs. The newest is the SmartBots API. The most popular, in terms of mashups, is the Twitter API. We list [num] Twitter mashups. Below you’ll find some more stats from the directory, including the entire list of social APIs.
Back in May I wrote about the race for either unified APIs or API standards to bridge the growing number of APIs in specific industries or areas. Unified APIs are created by a third party provider to bridge multiple APIs, while API standards would potentially create an industry-wide standard of how APIs should operate.
Uberblic is another instance of what may become a trend in the world with thousands of APIs: the Meta-API. The Uberblic Doppleganger API is currently in beta, but it is quite ambitious in that it looks to position itself as a API cross-reference or mutli-plexer. Submit an ID from one API to the Doppleganger, get 4-5 IDs for matching content from other APIs.
Last April we wrote about How Twitter’s 1 API Gave Birth to 43 New APIs. One year later, there are now 86 Twitter-derived APIs in our directory. The growth of Twitter-based APIs outpaced Twitter mashups, an area we also saw a lot of growth. There are now nearly 600 Twitter mashups. It wasn’t even a year ago that we marked the 400 Twitter mashup milestone.
RESTful approaches to APIs have made them easier to deploy and consume, leading to a recent explosion in the number of available APIs. One byproduct of such growth is there are a lot of APIs offering similar or even duplicate services, but that have very different approaches to delivering their APIs. Cloud computing and social networking are two areas where we’ve seen the growth in APIs. As the number of APIs grow, the need for interoperability increases.
This week we had 25 new APIs added to our API directory including a CRM for small business, ebook price data engine, virtual learning management system, fax delivery service, phone number verification service and corporate social networking platform. We gave a little extra attention to two of these APIs in posts about a tall glass of beer data and a 6 sided popularity metric. Below is more detail on all 25 of these new APIs.
