This past week 8 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 17 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include exfm, GeoNB, Mogreet and VK. The most often used APIs this week are SoundCloud, VK and YouTube. It never rains in Seattle. Seriously. In the last two months we’ve had one day of rain. While I’m not dying for six months of gray, drizzly weather I still wonder when we’ll next see some of the wet stuff. Today we’ll take a look at mashups that help answer the age old question “What’s the weather going to be today?” These include mashups that give weather forecasts, conditions for aviation and boating enthusiasts, and even a couple that have fun with the weather. Read below for more information.
The curious popularity of the Google Weather API appears to be coming to a close. The search giant never officially supported the feature, but developers have used the unofficial feed available from the iGoogle homepage. With iGoogle now set for deprecation in November, developers are reporting that the once simple weather API is no longer returning data.

Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include 3dCart, Ambassador, BigCommerce, ChannelAdvisor, Endicia Label Server, Goodsie, Google Checkout, Google Storage, Highwire, MediaFire, Payvment, Sears, ShipStation, Volusion Shopping Cart and World Weather Online. The most often used APIs this week are DBpedia, eBay and Google Maps. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Shopping (12 APIs, 12 mashups), Shipping (5 APIs, 5 mashups) and Music (5 APIs, 5 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:
Twilio remains one of our most popular APIs as measured by number of mashups. It is the seventh most used API in our directory. We did a review of popular Twilio mashups last year. Today we’ll look at the latest mashups that make use of Twilio.

Weather has always been a popular category with 26 Weather APIs listed in our directory. While XML is still the leading data format used, the trend of JSON becoming the developer’s choice over the last few years is also reflected in the Weather category. Since the beginning of 2010, JSON is the leading data format used by Weather APIs with 11 added to the directory out of 12 JSON weather APIs. The chart below shows the breakdown of APIs using various data formats.
Popular weather data site Weather Underground (Wunderground) has a new version of its Weather Underground API and two things are notable: its former XML service is being phased out in favor of JSON. And it has a very clear pricing structure, though there’s a free version for non-commercial projects.
