WS-REST to Host 5th Edition of International API Workshop

WS-REST.org has announced that it will host the fifth edition of the International Workshop on Web APIs and RESTful Design at the 23rd International World Wide Web Conference this April in Seoul, South Korea. The first workshop was held in 2010. As APIs have continued to drive innovation in the connected world, the workshop has continued to refine its scope of study, broaden its expectations and increase interest. As the organizers begin to develop this years agenda, PW caught up with Carlos Pedrinaci, a research fellow at The Open University, UK, and one of the event organizers.


The DataTank Offers API Tool to Help Power Smart Cities

A new API tool that transforms open datasets so they can be accessed by a REST API is capturing the attention of local governments interested in implementing smart cities policies. The DataTank is a data publishing platform that can also be used as a plug-in with the CKAN open data platform. It is created and managed by the Belgium chapter of the Open Knowledge Foundation, which operates as a social enterprise startup. ProgrammableWeb spoke with The DataTank’s Technical Lead Jan Vansteenlandt about the new open data/API tool and how it can be used to drive the smart cities agenda.

Novartis Challenge Shows There Are Still Entry Points into Mobile Health Market

With winners announced and organizers now regrouping to analyze the next stages, the Novartis mHealth Challenge – held last weekend in San Francisco and giving away over $40,000 in prize money – has demonstrated that for developers looking to aggregate APIs together into a health-focused, consumer-facing end-product, there is still plenty of room to enter the growing market. This week we had 43 new APIs added to our API directory including a centralized platform provided by the U.S government to aid small businesses, ambient sounds for real time events, a cloud service brokerage platform that, which is highly scalable and customizable, and a cloud-based hosting service that can scale up or down depending on site traffic.
