2011 was another great year for mashups. At ProgrammableWeb we saw over 900 new mashups added to our directory. Popular app categories such as mapping, search and shopping continued to lead the way. This year however saw social apps continue their rapid growth from the last couple of years. As 2011 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the best and most popular mashups that were submitted.
This past week 15 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 24 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include AccuWeather, Fitbit, ImmobilienScout24 and Rovi Cloud Services. The most often used APIs this week are Facebook, Last.fm and Twitter. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Music (5 APIs, 7 mashups), Shopping (3 APIs, 3 mashups) and Mapping (2 APIs, 3 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:

Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include BookMooch, EEA Discomap, Fitbit, Google Fusion Tables, Hunch, InfoChimps Twitter, ISBN db and LibraryThing. The most often used APIs this week are Google Maps, InfoChimps Twitter and Twitter. Remember radio? It played music through the air and determined who the next big thing would be. Okay, so maybe some of us still listen to radio in our cars, so these tricks may seem familiar. Have you ever tried to be the ninth caller? Have you ever requested a song from your favorite star? Thanks to the Twilio API and the mashups below, you can now do each of those things without needing the help of any darn radio station.
Here are 9 new APIs just added to our API directory. A couple that we covered earlier this week came from the big name API providers via Google’s new Maps Data API and Yahoo launching the Placemaker API. Also in the headlines is our new entry for the Wolfram Alpha API. Other interesting new directory entries include the TweetShrink API for helping shrink those just-too-long twitter tweets, the UK Civil Service API for finding UK civil service jobs, and the Tinysong API for find where a song is available for streaming online.
