It used to be that integrating data across different applications required an unnatural act involving complicated pieces of middleware. In recent times, accomplishing that act has become easier thanks to lighter-weight middleware based on standard Web services and RESTful APIs. But even still, accomplishing that task still requires the skills of a developer. In contrast, the next revolution in data integration is going to be characterized by business users integrating data across applications on their own at will.

This week we had 85 new APIs added to our API directory including a data integration service, a social bookmarking tool, video chat service, crowd-sourcing employment platform, medicinal marijuana information service, and a photo sharing service. We also reviewed the suite of Salesforce.com APIs, covered a public bathroom location service and InfoChimps’ latest bundle of Geo APIs. Below are more details on each of these new APIs.
Salesforce.com is holding its flagship event Dreamforce at Moscone Center in San Franscisco this week, and before we spend time covering some of its new initiatives in what the company calls the Social Enterprise, I thought it would be a good time to review the APIs that developers can use as part of the DeveloperForce program.
This past week 16 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 30 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include DoIt, Google Directions, Kelkoo, Magento, Miso, Pachube, PicPlz, WikiLocation and Yahoo Weather. The most often used APIs this week are Facebook Social Plugins, Google Maps and Twitter. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Social (8 APIs, 14 mashups), Mapping (4 APIs, 10 mashups) and Shopping (3 APIs, 3 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:
This past week the new mashups added to our mashup directory used a total of 28 different APIs. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs that developers used this week include Akismet, Big Huge Thesaurus, Bing Maps, ShareThis, and the Your Mapper API. The most often used APIs this week were Flickr, Google Maps, and Twitter.
