Governments across the world have made attempts to restrict usage of messaging technology by its citizens for various purposes. The latest is the ban on bulk SMS and MMS by mobile users in India by the Government of India. The 15-day restriction, which was put into effect on August 18, restricts mobile users from sending not more than 5 SMS and MMS and also other restrictions on message size. The Government directed telecom operators to implement these restrictions in the wake of recent disturbances in the country, where it was inferred that messaging mechanisms like SMS contributed to widespread rumors, which fueled the unrest.
Startups need to build quickly and iterate quicker. That means not re-inventing the wheel — whenever possible. Just 5 years ago, people were asking why would you use an API? This has quickly turned to why wouldn’t you! Since March 2007 there are 14 times as many APIs listed on the ProgrammableWeb site. And the growth rate is accelerating. API listings on ProgrammableWeb have exploded this year so far, doubling the same period last year, and about four times the same period in 2010 (see chart below).
When it comes to Social Networks, Facebook definitely towers over the rest when it comes to numbers. While Facebook might be hard at work to expand its reach by entering new areas, Mxit which is Africa’s largest social network has plans of its own to expand its base by throwing open its platform via the Mxit API and encouraging developers to integrate Mxit into their applications.
