The Mendeley API provides access to research tools and data. In the interview below we discuss with Rosario García de Zúñiga, Senior Software Engineer & Team Leader at Mendeley, how she sees the future of open APIs. This interview is part of a series conducted by ProgrammableWeb and Hojoki (where I work), an aggregation tool for apps such as Google Drive, Dropbox and Evernote, that helps support team work.

Our API directory now includes 46 research APIs. The newest is the Globus Online Transfer API. The most popular, in terms of mashups, is the Mendeley API. We list 3 Mendeley mashups. Below you’ll find some more stats from the directory, including the entire list of research APIs.
This week we had 78 new APIs added to our API directory including an acronym service, securities trading service, traffic information service, language translation service, online learning platform, web application bug tracking service, mobile application backend service and location-based mobile game. Below is more details on each of these new APIs.

The Mendeley Binary Battle is over and the winners have been announced. To recap, the Binary Battle is an innovation challenge similar to the X-Prize, for using the Mendeley API. The platform gives anyone access to a layer of social and demographic information about research, enabling scientific research to be used alongside any application like FourSquare uses location on Twitter.
This past week 16 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 35 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include 8coupons, Agendize Action, Avvo, Expedia, Google Distance Matrix, Google Plus, Google Sidewiki, Hoiio SMS, Hoiio Voice , Mendeley, PLoS Search and Xa.ly. The most often used APIs this week are Amazon eCommerce, Google Maps and Twilio. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Mapping (6 APIs, 9 mashups), Social (4 APIs, 6 mashups) and Telephony (4 APIs, 5 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:

There have been hundreds of Startup Weekends around the world in 2011 alone. By the end of the year, Seattle will have hosted several, including the Startup Weekend Seattle EDU which starts this weekend. The 54 hour event brings together software developers, graphic designers and business people to build education focused applications. What better way to give these new startups a leg up than to encourage them to build on top of one or more of the 40 education APIs in the directory?
