Echo Nest’s API already powers hundreds of music apps (e.g. MTV, Music Hunter, Pocket Hipster, etc.). With new enhancements to its API, Echo Nest looks to expand its reach beyond the music industry by “us[ing] music to drive non-music apps.” Echo Nest added “Taste Profile Similarity” and an “affinity prediction” system to its existing platform. With the new features, Echo Nest hopes to connect music listeners to other listeners with similar tastes and predict behavior unrelated to musical preferences.
Vadio is building a business off the YouTube API. The company also has its own technology for translating a list of songs into music video playlists no matter where the videos are stored. Vadio has already seen interest from radio stations, because the product is more appealing than simple audio and increases listener engagement.

When launching and managing your API, many companies choose to do all the work themselves, unaware that are service providers available to help you plan, deploy, launch and manage your API infrastructure and ecosystem. To help bring awareness, I wanted to take a few moments and do a roundup of API service providers.
This past week 23 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 32 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include Alcatel-Lucent Open, Facebook Graph, Facebook Social Plugins, Goodreads, Google Geocoding and Google Single SignOn. The most often used APIs this week are Twilio, Twilio SMS and YouTube. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Social (5 APIs, 9 mashups), Search (3 APIs, 5 mashups) and Mapping (3 APIs, 6 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:

Mobile commerce is a huge business opportunity because, at least in the United States, there is not much infrastructure to support it. That’s why mobile platform company Appcelerator recently announced its integration with the PayPal API. Now iPhone, Android and iPad developers using the paid version of the company’s Titanium framework also get the ability to conduct mobile commerce.
Sure, YouTube gets all the press. And YouTube gets most of the mashups. But when it comes to video APIs, there’s a lot more than just YouTube. In fact, there are 100 video APIs, from live content Ustream to micro-vlogging 12 seconds.
