With the weekend coming up let’s take a look back at the mashups that were added to the ProgrammableWeb mashup directory over the last couple of weeks. We’ll cover mashups that include a tool for local discovery, a jukebox for your phone, a political social network and an app showing real time statuses of DC metro lines. Read below for more details on each.
This past week 8 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 17 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include exfm, GeoNB, Mogreet and VK. The most often used APIs this week are SoundCloud, VK and YouTube. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Social (4 APIs, 4 mashups), Music (4 APIs, 4 mashups) and Reference (2 APIs, 2 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:
This week we had 81 new APIs added to our API directory including a Google Apps reseller account management service, iPad point-of-sale service, photo manipulation service, customer feedback service and a customer loyalty program service. We also covered three APIs for beating CAPTCHAs and reviewed the DynaMed clinical reference API. Below are more details on each of these new APIs.
Skybiometry’s cloud-based face detection API serves as a drop-in replacement for face.com’s API. This REST-based API can be used in combination with almost any programming language, making it possible to integrate with any device that has internet connectivity.
Lambda Labs provides a much needed replacement to the Face.com Facial Recognition API. Google announced API downtime that goes beyond the immediate future. Facebook spotlights Tripl. Plus: An app expands collaboration tools in LinkedIn Groups, a Cool interactive map mashup of US Presidential Election and 11 New APIs.
This week we had 74 new APIs added to our API directory including a large dataset querying service, badge creation and earning system, social product recommendation platform and an API integration platform. In addition, we covered a new API that enables B@B personalization marketing, an alternative to the Face.com API, the first Mark Wahlberg API and the release of the DGCourseReview API. Below are more details on each of these new APIs.
Of the many APIs we published this week, eight were highlighted on the blog by our team of writers. In this post, we’ll shine a spotlight on those eight, which included the LambdaLabs Face API for facial detection, which takes up where the Face.com API left off. We said it’s a great first release, but needs to add face recognition in addition to detection. That feature is coming soon. Read more in the LambdaLabs Face API post or check out the LambdaLabs Face API profile.
Google’s new partner program makes the search giant look pretty enterprisey. The weather channel uses Facebook to tell you which friends might be affected by bad weather. Plus: a civic-minded Colorado hackathon, YouTube load data and 20 new APIs.
It’s been a little over two weeks since the latest Facebook API euthanasia which saw the Face.com API shuttered. Among those disappointed by the API shutdown were the founders of LambdaLabs, which quickly began work on an alternative, the LambdaLabs Face API. Though not as full-featured as the Face.com API, Lambda’s looks likely to stay online longer.
Facebook is closing down the Face.com API for facial detection and recognition. It follows a long line of API euthanasia from the social network. Expect Face.com’s technology to be integrated into Facebook itself and the great domain name otherwise repurposed. As for Face.com’s 45,000+ developers? Sorry Charlie.
