The Rise of .io Domain Names for APIs

Put.ioTalk to developers about their cache of great domain names and these days you’re likely to find a few Dot IOs in the mix. The ProgrammableWeb directory tracks the growth of this TLD, where the .io stands for Indian Ocean, not input/output. No matter, APIs and other developer-oriented services have made the domain extension popular, with nearly 100 APIs in the directory hosted on .io domains.

Dive.ioWith the holiday weekend coming up in the U.S., avid divers may be making their way to their favorite spots. Dive.io is a web service designed for divers, so they can log their dives, share their favorite dive spots, and meet fellow divers. It’s very specific, but it does its task quite well. It also has a nice API, allowing for integration of the service into, well, anything at all.


18 New APIs: Gravatar, Internet Radio and Semantic Analysis
