Startups need to build quickly and iterate quicker. That means not re-inventing the wheel — whenever possible. Just 5 years ago, people were asking why would you use an API? This has quickly turned to why wouldn’t you! Since March 2007 there are 14 times as many APIs listed on the ProgrammableWeb site. And the growth rate is accelerating. API listings on ProgrammableWeb have exploded this year so far, doubling the same period last year, and about four times the same period in 2010 (see chart below).
This past week 13 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 26 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include Airbrake , Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon SNS, iSpeech Automated Speech Recognition, iTunes & App Store Search, MongoLab, New Relic, Pinterest and Planning Center. The most often used APIs this week are Google Maps, HotelsCombined and Seatwave. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Database (4 APIs, 4 mashups), Tools (4 APIs, 4 mashups) and Social (3 APIs, 4 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:
Foursquare has embraced the open maps movement. Russia’s biggest search engine integrates with the Topsy API. Plus: Disqus comments available in Gnip, Microsoft launches its own Webmaster Tools API and 21 new APIs.

With the recent unveiling of Facebook comments, many have questioned the future of Disqus, the previous comment widget darling. There are some advantages to each, but something Disqus definitely has going for it is its
Disqus API, as well as other features like email moderation.

The most often used APIs this week are Facebook, Google Earth and Google Maps. Last month Twitter CEO Evan Williams announced Twitter Anywhere, but it wasn’t exactly clear what it was. Now the microblogging platform, which looks pretty busy with all its announcements centered around its developer conference, is sharing more details about the API that is part display widget and part external login, all controlled via JavaScript.
