The new Yahoo Content Analysis API capitalizes on the success of its term extraction API while adding new functionality. The reborn implementation not only extracts terms and entities but ranks them based on perceived importance within the article. Peter Levinson, product manager for Yahoo Content Analysis, says “The new API gives developers actionable metadata about their content. By extracting and then ranking terms on the page, the API separates signal from noise in unstructured content.”
The API landscape is an extremely well chronicled and championed space. Every product has its own API nearly, and developers still get excited about digging into the newest, greatest data on the market. It’s the developer equivalent of having to have the newest Apple gadget, right when it becomes available.
In our zeal to access more and more data though, we’ve forgotten what working with data is supposed to be all about.
This week we had 48 new APIs added to our API directory including an SMS integration service, environmental database, web hosting management services, social games mechanics platform, realtime public transit information and a book trading community service. In addition we covered Datafiniti’s efforts to provide the web’s datasets via SQL queries. Below are more details on each of these new APIs.
If there’s a new dawn in the age of search, Datafiniti is the sun. They are the first to take a new and profound approach to search in years. Most search engines return a list of links to web pages, but Datafiniti has much bigger plans. Instead of links, they return a set of data. A search for a burrito in Texas would give you a list of restaurants complete with goodies like reviews in addition to the important bits like name and address. The dataset itself has been out there for years, but its the aggregartion and presentation that’s different. With the Datafiniti API, it is now possible for developers to easily integrate that data into web applications.
