What’s that song? If you’re out and about, you might reach for your mobile phone’s “name that tune” app, such as Shazam on iPhone. But if you’re at your PC, it can be as easy as clicking over to the Audiggle app, which reports on sound from video, internet radio, or anything passing audio to your speakers.
Music mashups are one of our most popular categories, with over 300 music mashups listed. It also makes for a variety of different types of applications, from lyrics to audio to video and more. The mashups below all use Last.fm, which has the distinction of being used by nearly half of all music mashups.
This past week 12 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 27 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include Expono, Garmin MotionBased, HotUKDeals, iTunes and iTunes Connect and Picnik. The most often used APIs this week are Facebook, Google Maps and Twitter. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Mapping (6 APIs, 9 mashups), Photos (3 APIs, 3 mashups) and Internet (3 APIs, 4 mashups).
2010 is not yet half over and already Music Hack Day is hitting its third city of the year: San Francisco. On May 15th and 16th, scores of hackers will convene at the Automatic Lounge for a 48 hour hack fest themed around all things music.
Most mashups rely on data from other APIs to do their thing. That’s part of the power of open APIs. There’s a special class of mashup that we’re featuring today. These extract additional data, hidden from casual view. Now you can find out where that short URL points, the lyrics (and more) for any song, or the spot where you can meet in the middle–as long as you can spell rendezvous.
