The Importance of Impermanence in API Design

At the API Craft un-conference this week in Detroit, some of the best minds in the API business gathered to talk over the problems that plague us most. It was a unique event in that the agenda was set and run by the attendees in true meet-up fashion. Quakers will recognize the format – for the conference kick-off, the group sits in silence until someone is moved to suggest a session. You suggest it, you run it and anyone who attends your session also participates in it. The sessions are true whiteboard brainstorming activities, with the outcomes posted into Github for future reading.

With the recent shutdown of Google Reader, many of us are still looking for the best tool to aggregate news. 9 APIs Used in 7 Days: Indeed, Bing Translator and BBC

This past week 6 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 9 different APIs were used to build them. and ome of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include Evernote. The most often used APIs this week are Bing Translator, Forvo and indeed. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Shopping (2 APIs, 2 mashups), Utility (2 APIs, 2 mashups) and Mapping (1 APIs, 1 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:

The API’s technical webpage describes the API as “RESTish,” with responses returned in a variety of formats.  The site states that, “The goal is not to follow REST’s practices closely, but rather to make an easy API to get up to speed with using a dynamic language or curl.
