The Riproad API: Integrating Public Health

Greg Bates, August 28th, 2013

RipRoadThere are many ways to slice the tools medical providers need to make their practices work efficiently. One is the full-service, broadly focused athenahealth or AdvancedMD. RipRoad takes a different route, focusing on connecting providers and payors to patients on their mobile devices. The RipRoad API integrates their tools (that include e-mail, SMS, MMS, IVR, push notifications, native smartphones apps and the mobile web) with third parties.

Riproad currently concentrates on programs where regular patient contact is beneficial, including Diabetes, Asthma, Prenatal Care, Adolescent Health, and Flu Safety. Tools include a health program for teenagers, an appointment reminder program, and a messaging program. Riproad reaches four audiences. For patients, the goal is engagement and education. For providers, it’s giving them the tools to educate those patients, to increase patient adherence to protocols, and to help them change patient behaviors. Riproad also serves members of health plans by providing tools for living healthier lives. Finally, Riproad helps government provide the same health advice to patients.

Riproad has a decidedly public health bent, often focusing on clients who serve hard to reach, at-risk populations. Services include HIV clinic locator programs for health departments, reaching minority and immigrant mothers-to-be, and through its influenza program reaching low-income pediatric and adolescent populations.
