When the Center for Investigative Reporting published its data visualization for Department of Veterans Affairs’ backlog of disability benefits claims, little did it know that the initiative would grow to a large extent and even end up as an API. Well that is exactly how it has panned out and Developers now have a chance to visualize the data in more effective ways. Over the last 8 months, the data has grown, backlog has reduced a bit but delays have increased. CIR has now announced an API and developers can get access to overall and local data around average wait times, number of veterans waiting, claims pending and much more. The API is available via its Github page. Veterans are also requested to share their experiences for the benefits processing, which appear on the visualization.
