Google Introduces Google Plus Sign-In: Features Secure Log-In and Interactive Sharing

Janet Wagner, February 26th, 2013

Google PlusGoogle has just announced the introduction of the Google Plus Sign-In, a new feature of the Google Plus platform that allows developers using the Google Plus API to add a secure sign-in to their web and mobile applications.

In addition to a secure one-click sign-in, the Google Plus Sign-In offers other features that developers can add to their applications including (but not limited to):

  • Interactive Posts – This provides a “call to action” button. When an app user engages in an activity such as buying an item, checking into a location, making a comment, etc, they can choose to send an interactive post to a friend(s). The post is then displayed in the friend’s Google Plus stream where they can respond to the “call to action.” There are currently over 100 button labels available for developers to use for app call-to-action buttons.
  • Over-The-Air Installs – This provides users signing into a website an option of downloading an app directly to their Android device without having to leave the site.
  • App Activities – This allows the activity of an app user to be displayed on their Google+ profile (if permission is granted by the user).

The new Google Sign-In feature is being rolled out gradually, however it is currently available on several websites including Fitbit, Flixster, The Guardian, and USA Today.

The Google Plus Sign-In works across devices so it makes it easier for developers to add Sign-In features to websites and mobile applications. Developers interested in using the Google Plus Sign-In can find more information in the developer docs.
