Nike has launched the Nike+ API developer portal. The portal gives developers access to data captured by Nike+ FuelBand and Nike+ Running through an API. The goal of the developer portal and corresponding APIs consists of a health driven, forward thinking aim:
“[U]se Nike+ technology to create products and services that will inspire athletes across a broad range of activity and health goals.”
The portal launch coincides with the announcement of the Nike+ Accelerator Program. Nike and TechStars will select 10 teams to develop applications based on the Nike+ platform for a three month period. Applications to participate must be complete by Feb. 3, 2013. Those interested can learn more at the FAQ site.
The Nike+ API uses REST protocol and returns data in an XML format. The Nike+ FuelBand API gives developers access to data such as calories burned, NikeFuel earned, daily goal, and streaks. The Nike+ Running API retrieves running metric data such as distance, pace, and GPS location data. Those interested in the platform can learn more at the developer site.
With the launch of the developer portal, Nike hopes to take fitness/health apps to the next level. For example, developers can now mix consumption data (i.e. food intake) with output data (i.e. exercise data) for a better understanding of a user’s overall wellness. With a focused incubator program overseeing creative apps built on the platform, expect some innovative, useful apps to arise soon.
