Romin Irani, December 17th, 2012

Google PlacesThe submission window for Google Places API Developer Challenge has just ended. The 3-month submission period saw developers from all over the world have submitted applications that combine Google Places API and municipal data sources to improve their communities. The winners of this challenge stand to win 2 tickets to Google I/O 2013, showcasing their app and meeting the Google Maps and Places API team.

There are 2 categories of awards: Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice Award. And the latter is where you as a reader can come in. In a week from now, Google has thrown open the Public voting phase for the People’s Choice Award. The public voting is open till December 31. The winners will be announced on January 30.

The public gallery contains nearly 50 applications that you can view and cast your vote. A Youtube video for each of the applications has been put up and you can give you  +1 to any application. The Google Places API team is still scrutinizing a bunch of applications that were submitted just before the deadline and hope to finalize the list by the end of this week.

If you are a fan of Mapping Mashups, the gallery will keep you engaged for a while. Don’t forget to +1 an App, if you like it.
