Today in APIs: FlightStats Goes Multilingual, API Strategy Conference Rescheduled and 13 New APIs

Kevin Sundstrom, November 14th, 2012

FlightStatsFlightStats is starting by adding Simplified Chinese, but it won’t end there. The API Strategy Conference has been Rescheduled for February 2013. Plus: MongoDB company announces strategic investment from Intel Capital and Red Hat, Active points to new related APIs in ProgrammableWeb, and 13 new APIs.

FlightStats Goes Multilingual

FlightStats announced today that its API has learned Simplified Chinese. Developers can now receive replies to their API requests in this language and will soon have even greater options. The plan is for German and Japanese to be added by mid-december. In a press release today, Jeff Kennedy, FlightStats CEO, had this to say:

“We have many customers with a global user base and are supplying data to customers in over 120 different countries. Translating the data responses makes the applications powered by our global flight data more user-friendly and gives our customers the tools to expand their addressable market and to better support travelers worldwide.”

The FlightStats API is RESTful and returns data formatted in both XML and JSON. The ProgrammableWeb directory contains 209 travel APIs.

API Strategy Conference Rescheduled

On november 2nd 3scale made the official announcement that the API Strategy Conference would be postponed as a result of Superstorm Sandy. The announcement made the promise that:

“the conference will be back very shortly with new dates, the same great speakers and no doubt, even more energy!”

Well, pack your bags (maybe you are lucky and never unpacked them) because we now know the revised dates for the conference. It is all going down on February 21,22 2013.

News You Shouldn’t Miss

13 New APIs

Today we had 13 new APIs added to our API directory including an iranian sms text messaging service, an illinois geographic boundary data, a european payment processing service, a european payment transactions, a customer management system, an earth sciences data sharing service and an earth sciences data services. Below is more details on each of these new APIs.

CanDoo SMSCanDoo SMS API: The service provides SMS text messaging to mobile phones within Iran. It allows an application to send a message specified in the request to one or many recipients, up to 90 numbers per request. The service also can handle replies and inbound messaging, with account credit balance checks and reporting of delivery success and failure rates.

API methods support submitting a request with message body, recipient phone number, and encoding details. Methods also support review of unread text messages received by the account, with message body and date-time stamp according to the Jalali calendar used in Iran. The API makes available reports of completed message delivery and message failure for sent SMS messages and current account balance. The site is in Persian.

Chicago Boundary ServiceChicago Boundary Service API: The Chicago Boundary Service is a Chicago Tribune project that provides geographic and political boundary information for Illinois. The Boundary Service API provides a RESTful interface to that data. Results are returned in JSON or JSONP formatted data with nested GeoJSON for describing boundary shapes.

Clearhaus GatewayClearhaus Gateway API: Clearhaus is an emerging European payment transaction provider. The Clearhaus Gateway API provides a RESTful interface for processing transactions. Endpoints are discoverable directly through the API, with supported calls including, debits, credits, and much more.

Clearhaus ResolveClearhaus Resolve API: Clearhaus is an emerging European payment transaction provider. The Clearhaus Resolve API provides resource discoverability services including chargebacks, data uploads, and retrieval requests. Endpoints are discoverable directly through the API.

ClevertimClevertim API: Clevertim is a customer relationship management system (CRM) for small businesses. Clevertim allows users to manage their customer contact information and track history of customers.

The Clevertim API allows developers to access and integrate the functionality of Clevertim with other applications. Some example API methods include managing contacts, retrieving reminders and opportunities, and managing notes.

EarthChemEarthChem API: The service provides a platform for data sharing and queries serving researchers in geology and related sciences. It focuses especially on data related to chemistry, chronology, and petroleum exploration and production. The portal originated with support of the U.S. National Science Foundation to give federated access to major geochemical databases from the U.S. Geological Service and other international providers.

API methods support search for datasets from published research by author name, article title, journal name, year of publication, or keyword character string. Results can be filtered by date range, either for publication or data collection, and location specified as a mapping polygon or with less specific identifiers. Results may also be limited to specific characteristics of data samples such as materials or chemical compounds and chonological age of the minerals sampled.

Integrated Earth Data ApplicationsIntegrated Earth Data Applications API: The service provides geology data and mapping through a set of web services built on the MapService platform of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). That architecture exposes datasets to a number of OGC-compliant desktop clients as well as the service’s own REST and SOAP APIs. Data include datasets for seismograph recordings and geological sample profiles from the System for Earth Sample Registration (SESAR).

API methods support queries against XML records of seismology datasets recording earthquakes and other geological events. Methods also support retrieval of analytical data for samples of rock, minerals, and other geological materials by universal identifiers created at the time the samples are collected. Methods for managing samples also allow uploading of new records documenting sample collections for users who have registered accounts with the service.

IRIS Seismographs in SchoolsIRIS Seismographs in Schools API: Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology’s Seismographs in Schools Program provides real-time seismic data and other research tools to a nationwide network of participating teachers. The IRIS Seismographs in Schools API provides developers with a RESTful interface for automating access to IRIS SIS data.

Lorem Ipsum MeLorem Ipsum Me API: Lorem Ipsum Me is a lorem ipsum tool that generates placeholder text in either essay or blog format. The Lorem Ipsum Me API provides a simple REST interface for generating JSON, plain text, or XML formatted text.

Loripsum.netLoripsum.net API: Loripsum is a lorem ipsum tool that generates placeholder text. Users can customize the number of paragraphs, paragraph length, and a variety of formatting options. The Loripsum API allows developers to access customized placeholder text formatted as HTML or plain text.

OpenADROpenADR API: Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) is an open and standardized way for electricity providers and system operators to communicate Demand Response (DR) signals with each other and with their customers. It uses a common language that functions over any IP-based communications network, such as the Internet.

Demand Response can be used to ease severely constrained electrical grids, postponing or even averting energy crises. Automated Demand Response (ADR) reduces the operating costs of DR programs and increases their reliability by sending and receiving DR signals automatically.

The OpenADR provides programmatic access to the OpenADR specification so that developers may access and implement it with their grid management systems. This API employs SOAP calls issued in XML format.

SpeedskatingResults.comSpeedskatingResults.com API: SpeedskatingResults.com provides long track metric competition results from ovals worldwide. The SpeedskatingResults.com API provides developer access to results data including a skater’s personal records or season bests, competition lists, and seed times. Results are XML formatted.

TenHandsTenHands API: TenHands is a video conferencing and collaboration service. TenHands can be integrated with collaboration applications such as Google, DropBox, Box, and LogMeIn.

The TenHands API allows developers to access and integrate the functionality of TenHands with other applications. Some example API methods include managing users, managing and listing groups, and creating groups and conferences.
