Where Did Your Tax Dollars Go? There is an API For That

WhatWePayForI am certain that anyone who lives in a country with sales tax has looked at a pay check after taxation has taken its toll and wondered how their tax dollars were spent. If you live in the United States there is a simple way to answer this question. The WhatWePayFor API is connected to an online database that provides federal budget data. Whatwepayfor.com makes this information more useable by breaking it down to how much is payed by individuals.

The WhatWePayFor API was recently featured in the Data Viz Challenge. From Datavizchallenge.org:

“Using data provided by WhatWePayFor.com, we challenged artists, coders, and the general public to create data visualizations that would make it easier for U.S. citizens to understand how the government spends our tax money.”

Below is a video that presents the results:

The WhatWePayFor API is one of 305 government APIs that are listed in the ProgrammableWeb directory.
