PodioFor the past few years there has been a sharp rise in self-employed workers as well as workers who perform the majority of their duties from home. This post highlights several feature packed and versatile online project management and collaboration platforms.

Podio is an online work platform that allows businesses to create a customized workplace by combining work apps such as tasks, edits, status updates, comments, reporting and much more. There are thousands of apps available in the Podio App Store all of which are free to use and do not require technical skills to set up and customize.

For technical users, Podio provides an extensive, RESTful Podio API with results delivered in JSON data format. The API allows the Podio platform to be integrated with other services and developers to build custom applications.

At the time of this writing, the basic Podio account is FREE for up to five employees and five external members. Use of apps and workspaces is unlimited.

TeamboxTeambox is an open source project management and team collaboration tool that includes a variety of features such as create and edit tasks, task tracking, file uploading and management and much more. There are several apps and integrations available for Teambox including Google Docs, Dropbox and Github.

Teambox also provides the Teambox API, a RESTful, JSON API for integration with third party services or to create custom web applications.

Currently Teambox is FREE for up to five users and five personal projects. For managing commercial projects, registering for a PRO account is required.

TrelloTrello is a free, online collaboration tool that organizes your projects into different boards which users specify. This format allows users to see at a glance the current progress and status of each project. Each board allows additional information to be attached to it such as a description, conversations, file attachments, links and more.

Trello provides a simple, RESTful Trello API with JSON results that allows external applications and third party services to connect to specific project “boards” and retrieve information as needed.
