Collaboration platform Podio claims to help you “work the way you want to.” To achieve that goal, it means fitting its solution into your workflow. The latest change to the Podio platform has been a frequent customer request: integration with the Google Docs API. The company has added Google to its file upload dialog, with plenty of room for other providers in the future.
The Podio announcement explains its approach:
Often projects revolve around documents, but not just documents on your desktop. A lot of companies on Podio also use Google Docs to create online spreadsheets, presentations, and documents that can be accessed anywhere, shared, and even edited by the entire team… at the same time.
It’s no surprise then that combining Google Docs with projects and workflows in Podio has been a popular request. That’s why today we are releasing Google Docs for Podio – to give you an even better experience of working the way you want, around all types of documents. We’re so excited about this and we hope you will love it too.
At ProgrammableWeb, we have been using Podio for several months to keep up with the rapid API growth on our geographically distributed team. We’re also pretty addicted to Google Docs, so I expect it will be convenient to merge the two.
Upon “uploading” a Google Doc to Podio, it appears that the permissions are set for anyone with the link to be able to view. While at first that may seem a little bit insecure, it’s a pretty hassle-free way of giving everyone in a workspace some access. It also means you will not need to explicitly share a Doc unless you want the other party to be able to edit it. A future enhancement from Podio could be to work with the sharing settings within the Google Docs API to connect Podio accounts with Google accounts, and let you choose the right access level from within Podio.
There’s a Podio API, too, so there’s room for even greater integration to your workflow. Check out the getting started video and another with anthropomorphized Google Docs characters (embedded below) that you will either find cute or creepy.
