We are all proud of our family history. But how many of us use tools to not just understand discover more about our family but also document and share this information with others, given that the keyword ’social’ has crept its way across most applications. RootsTech, a conference that is focused on family history research, brings together professionals from the field of technology and genealogy has thrown open a Developer Challenge to help create these applications.
This week we had 70 new APIs added to our API directory including an audio fingerprinting service, sentiment analysis and analytics service, affiliate marketing network, mobile app sales tracking service, visual search service and an eCommerce service. In addition we covered a “mobile engagement” platform adding revenue analytics to their service. Below are more details on each of these new APIs.
This past week 14 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 20 different APIs were used to build them. As the year comes to a close and holiday season looms, many of us look forward to taking a few days off to take a break from all of our hard work and relax. What better way to unwind this holiday season than by catching up on all of the movies you missed this year? You’re in luck as we’ve gotten many great mashups this year that let you watch movies and trailers, browse your Netflix queue (you do still subscribe to Netflix right?) and share with your friends. Popular APIs for these mashups include Rotten Tomatoes, YouTube and Netflix. So without further ado, kick off your shoes, grab some popcorn and give these movie mashups a try.
Email continues to be a critical part of most web applications today. Despite the rise of various methods of reaching out to users, transactional email continues to grow. Many developers prefer to offload the email functionality of their application to a service which does the heavy lifting of not just delivering your email but also provides tracking and other various other services. PostageApp, a provider of Email Management Services, has just announced a new version of its product that includes a new delivery engine, analytics and new plans.
Data startup Factual has been one of the most covered product offerings on our site. Over the last couple of years, it has expanded its open data set platform, using location data as its main offering to developers via its Factual Places APIs. The Factual team is on full steam and has just announced a single global API to access place data and added new countries. The company also is making available a rich collection of attributes about each restaurant in its places database.
Today Apsalar announced the release of two new components of its ApScience analytics suite for mobile applications: engagement index & revenue analytics. These new metrics will allow Apsalar clients to gain greater insight into how users are interacting with their application. It will also make it possible for users to be segmented based on the amount they spend in the app. You might be as surprised as I was to learn that this is a competitive space characterized by big data and advertising revenues. Apsalar hits all the bases with SDKs for Android, iOS, and a RESTful API.
The API landscape is an extremely well chronicled and championed space. Every product has its own API nearly, and developers still get excited about digging into the newest, greatest data on the market. It’s the developer equivalent of having to have the newest Apple gadget, right when it becomes available.
In our zeal to access more and more data though, we’ve forgotten what working with data is supposed to be all about.
The holiday shopping season is upon us, and that means finding gifts, and at this point… quick! For consumers, it translates into searching and researching, and lots of it in a relatively small amount of time. It also means shoppers are looking for innovative websites or applications to aid them in finding gifts, low prices, and sweet deals — all while making the shopping experience more enjoyable.
Twilio adds full SMS support for all of Canada in its continuing its quest for expansion. All existing Canadian Twilio numbers are now SMS enabled and this functionality will be built into all newly purchased numbers. Twilio recently expanded into Europe, where SMS is still in public beta. Rumor has it that the beta is going quite well and will be ending soon. That will bring three countries fully into SMS support: the US, UK, and Canada.
