61 New APIs: deviantART, Kinamik, TransiCast

This week we had 61 new APIs added to our API directory including a currency exchange rates service, social polling service, a social network for artists, data preservation and authentication service, cloud storage service and a public transit data aggregation service. In addition, we covered an API for measuring cloud spending. Below are more details on each of these new APIs.

Alaska Satellite FacilityAlaska Satellite Facility API: The Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) is one of eight Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAAC) which provide data to the NASA Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS). ASF's DAAC is the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) Data Center specializing in SAR data collection, processing, archiving, and distribution. An API allows access to the SAR Data Center archive using POST and GET protocols.

Are My Sites Up?Are My Sites Up? API: The Are My Sites Up? API allows users to integrate with AMSU's services, allowing them to monitor the status of their websites.

The API follows REST principles as closely as possible, with each resource (User, Site, Client) having its own URL and being accessed or changed in isolation. Users can also create and update their resources via sending XML to AMSU.

Biodiversity Heritage LibraryBiodiversity Heritage Library API: The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) is a consortium of natural history and botanical libraries. The BHL digitizes and makes available millions of pages of biological taxonomic literature, representing tens of thousands of titles and nearly 100,000 volumes. BHL provides an API to access, use, and share these records. It is a RESTful API, returning responses in JSON, XML, or XML wrapped in a SOAP envelope.

BlobbrBlobbr API: Blobbr is a social polling service that focuses on you and your responses rather than the aggregate results. With Blobbr, you can create and share your position and thoughts with your friends instead of just tallying up the responses and lumping you in with everyone else.

The Blobbr API is RESTful, with XML or JSON responses. Some API requests require authorization using your Blobbr username and password. All POST, PUT and DELETE requests require authorization, and user-specific GET requests do as well.

Challenge.govChallenge.gov API: Challenge.gov is a partnership program of the U.S. General Service Administration and ChallengePost. Government agencies posts challenges on this site and the public can post submissions to help develop to solutions. An XML feed of posted challenges is available to integrate into third-party apps and websites.

CloudabilityCloudability API: Cloudability tracks and manages more than 80 cloud and SaaS providers to give companies the ability to monitor and analyze complete cloud spend across multiple vendors. Cloudability provides companies running cloud services with recommendations on how to increase cloud-use efficiency and actionable insight into unnecessary overages and unused instances.

Cloudability offers an API that lets cloud users access their cloud billing and usage data from providers like AWS, Rackspace and Heroku, and connect that data to other businesses, financial systems or applications. The API uses RESTful calls and responses are formatted in XML and JSON.

CoCoa FishCoCoa Fish API: Cocoafish is a backend service that allows developers to create mobile applications without writing additional code. Cocoafish provides network features and data objects for applications and the ability to feature numerous API functions in one interface.

Culture GridCulture Grid API: Service from the UK Collections Trust to access information about collections of museums, libraries, or archives. Supports services to open up UK cultural institution collections for public benefit such as locating facilities in an area or near a landmark and discovering holdings and other resources offered to visitors.

deviantARTdeviantART API: DeviantART is the largest online social network for artists and art enthusiasts with over 19 million registered members, attracting 45 million unique visitors per month. The site's social network environment receives over 100,000 daily uploads of original art works ranging from traditional media, such as painting and sculpture, to digital art, pixel art, films and anime.

There are two ways for applications and websites to integrate with deviantART. The oEmbed API, which allows users to display content from deviantART, and the Sta.sh API, enabling submission of creative content to deviantART from any source. Both APIs use HTTP calls and responses can be formatted in XML, JSON and JSONP.

DirecttrackDirecttrack API: DirectTrack is an affiliate marketing and affiliate software tracking platform – powering the largest and most reputable affiliate networks and in-house affiliate programs. The API gives developers an interface to the platform. Functionality includes lookup and retrieval of creative types, campaign info, leads, statistics and more. The API uses SOAP protocol and responses are formatted in XML.

DLESEDLESE API: The Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) provides access to educational resource collections, Earth system datasets and imagery, and community resources for teachers, students, and scientists. The DLESE library is powered by the Digital Discovery System (DDS), an XML-based repository with search and discovery features. A small set of APIs are available to access and update the DLESE collection. The Search Service API is RESTful and returns responses in XML or JSON. Updates to the repository can be made by authorized clients using a RESTful API. There is also a JavaScript Search Service available for incorporating into websites.

Edmunds.com DealerEdmunds.com Dealer API: Edmunds has been a publisher of new and used automotive pricing guides to assist automobile buyers since 1966. In addition to pricing information, Edmunds.com includes car reviews; vehicle maintenance guidance and resources; tips and advice on buying/selling vehicles, insurance, fuel economy, and more; and user forums.

The Edmunds.com Dealer API is a RESTful API that provides information about automotive dealerships associated with a given criteria including zipcode, Make or Style ID. Responses are returned in JSON.

Edmunds.com InventoryEdmunds.com Inventory API: Edmunds has been a publisher of new and used automotive pricing guides to assist automobile buyers since 1966. In addition to pricing information, Edmunds.com includes car reviews; vehicle maintenance guidance and resources; tips and advice on buying/selling vehicles, insurance, fuel economy, and more; and user forums.

The Edmunds.com Inventory API is a RESTful API that gives access to the Edmunds.com vehicle database via Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Provide a VIN and specific vehicle information (for vehicles in the Edmunds.com database) will be returned in JSON format.

Edmunds.com VehicleEdmunds.com Vehicle API: Edmunds has been a publisher of new and used automotive pricing guides to assist automobile buyers since 1966. In addition to pricing information, Edmunds.com includes car reviews; vehicle maintenance guidance and resources; tips and advice on buying/selling vehicles, insurance, fuel economy, and more; and user forums.

The Edmunds.com Vehicle API allows developers access to year/make/model information, as well as style, True Market Value, and Vehicle Incentives offered by auto manufacturers. The API is RESTful and returns responses in JSON/JSONP.

FeedbackRoad FeedbackRoad API: FeedbackRoad is a web-based customer feedback and idea management service that allows companies and websites to collect customer feedback and ideas.

The FeedbackRoad API allows developers to access the functionality of FeedbackRoad. The API methods are listing users, adding users, deleting users, and editing user information.

Getting Homework DoneGetting Homework Done API: Submit a homework job (high school level or less) with the submitHomework method. The job will be done by one of our team of college graduate students. Check the status of your job with the status method and fetch the solution when it is done with the solution method. Code available on github. The API uses HTTP calls and responses are formatted in JSON.

Giving ImpactGiving Impact API: Set of tools for managing fund-raising campaigns or projects. Functions center on donor solicitation and communication, a streamlined donation experience, community building, and interface control. Methods support accessing campaign data to create unique promotions and/or integrate campaign data with other content.

HipsterJesusHipsterJesus API: HipsterJesus accesses Hipster Ipsum, a tool which automatically generates Hipster-flavored Lorem Ipsum text. Users can build applications that use the Hipster Ipsum functionality with the API. It uses HTTP calls and responses are formatted in TXT.

HM Revenue & CustomsHM Revenue & Customs API: HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) ensures the correct tax is paid at the right time, whether this relates to payment of taxes received by the department or entitlement to benefits paid. They provide an API that lets users retrieve public information relating to tax collections. The API uses SOAP protocol and responses are formatted in XML.

Information Environment Service RegistryInformation Environment Service Registry API: An academic "Yellow Pages" to support discovery and use of scholarly resources. Its catalog of information about electronic resources and research collections enables discovery of new resources and inclusion of content within other applications via web or machine interfaces. Content is multi-disciplinary, with particular strengths in the health and social sciences subject areas. Resource types include databases, datasets, bibliographic resources, e-learning materials, e-books, e-journals, repositories, research publications and image collections.

Kinamik Data Integrity Kinamik Data Integrity API: Kinamik is a service that offers users data integrity tools. Kinamik centralizes and preserves important and sensitive data by providing digital fingerprints to data and documents.

The Kinamik Data Intergrity API allows developers to access Kinamik's functionality. Some example API methods include protecting data with digital seals and fingerprints, identifying data and documents that aren't trustworthy, and integration with other applications. Public documentation is not available; interested developers should contact info@kinamik.com.

Kinross GroupKinross Group API: The Kinross Group provides a web-to-mobile system for sending and receiving structured messages to and from mobile phones. These messages can be 'structured' so that the presentation of the message to the user is done via a customizable form, and that the message content is delivered or sent via XML to external systems.

The Kinross Group API provides methods for sending and receiving messages, as well as managing user accounts and templates, using SOAP and XML.

KnewtonKnewton API: Knewton is an online learning platform. Their Adaptive Learning Platform allows for standard education content customization for individual students. They offer courses for standardized tests such as SAT, GMAT, and LSAT.

The Knewton API allows developers to access and integrate Knewton's functionality and data for other applications. Public documentation is not available; interested developers should sign up here http://www.knewton.com/signup/ for access.

LeadsMobLeadsMob API: LeadsMob is an integrated SMS and emailing service. Schedule and send SMS and email messages. Insert records, schedule messages, view reports through the mobile marketing API. Users can also track opens, clicks and conversions for the entire lifetime of the customer. The API uses HTTP calls and responses are formatted in XML.

legislation.gov.uklegislation.gov.uk API: The National Archives publishes all UK legislation, and its Legislation API provides consolidated UK legislation, with a few limitations, in a variety of formats for people to reuse. Identifier searches enable you to work out the correct identifier to use for an item or section of legislation. Listings enable you to find multiple items of legislation and information about them.

Librato MetricsLibrato Metrics API: Librato Metrics is a time series data management service that simplifies the process of storing, analyzing, and presenting any type of time series data. Metrics features a RESTful API, a scalable, redundant data store, and a flexible dashboard creation tool with a selection of presentation instruments and an alert service that ties into a number of web services such as email or IM. Metrics can be used for a wide variety of applications, from monitoring cloud or datacenter infrastructures to managing data collected from sensor networks.

Librato SilverlineLibrato Silverline API: Librato Silverline is an application resource monitoring and management service that helps DevOps and Operations teams monitor and manage the resource consumption of their apps for troubleshooting, automated handling of unexpected situations, performance and availability management, capacity planning, and server utilization improvement. The Silverline API provides access to all of the Silverline monitoring and management functions and all of the data stored within the service.

LISIRDLISIRD API: The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) is the space exploration institute at the University of Colorado at Boulder, investigating solar influences, atmospheric science, planetary physics, and space physics. LISIRD is the LASP Interactive Solar IRradiance Datacenter. LISIRD collects and provides access to solar spectral irradiance measurements from the soft X-ray (XUV) at 0.1 nm up to the near infrared (NIR) at 2700 nm, as well as Total Solar Irradiance.

The LASP Time Series Server (LaTiS) is an API allowing access to most LISIRD datasets. Available datasets include American and SPIDR Sunspot Numbers, space weather data, Lyman-alpha composite time series, solar spectral irradiance, historical Total Solar Irradiance reconstruction, daily solar radio flux, and more. LaTiS returns responses in PNG, CSV, DODS, HTML, DAT, BIN, JSON, INFO, DAS, PRO, and DDS.

Local Search Maps GeocoderLocal Search Maps Geocoder API: The Geocode API is a web service that allows users to easily integrate their site or application with the Google Maps or Virtual Earth API's. It is built to function with JavaScript, allowing the user to geocode based on criteria such as street address, city, state, and zip code.

London DataStoreLondon DataStore API: The London DataStore is a service of the Greater London Authority (GLA) to expose the data created by the GLA and other public sector organizations. Dataset categories include art and culture, business and economy, demographics, education, employment, transportation, and more. A number of APIs are available for these datasets. Suggestions and voting for the creation of new datasets is also available through the website.

Martindale-HubbellMartindale-Hubbell API: Martindale-Hubbell is a legal directory that contains information on law firms, banks an real estate offices as well as a digest of the collected laws of each state and court calendars. The database now contains more than one million lawyer profiles, forty thousand plus articles, topical discussion groups, forums, and peer-to-peer networking. An API is offered that will allow sites to access Martindale-Hubbell content and functionality and build deep, rich integrations. Full documentation is not publicly available but developers can contact mhdevelopers@lexisnexis.com for more information.

MediaCoreMediaCore API: MediaCore is a cloud based media publishing platform that lets users create, customize and monetize their video community. MediaCore provides an API for grabbing media info. A GET request to any of the public methods on this page will return a JSON object with the returned information. Information includes queried and listed media items, files and categories.

Met Office WOWMet Office WOW API: Met Office (formerly Meteorological Office) is the national weather service of the United Kingdom. Met Office provides shipping, weather, flood, air quality, and seasonal forecasts and advisories, as well as the Weather Observations Website (WOW). WOW is an interactive for viewing measurements such as temperature, wind speed/direction, snowfall, photos, and more. Registered users can upload data to WOW, providing detailed, site-specific observations, and an API is available for automatic and bulk uploads. The API can be used through specific meteorology software or used directly.

MSGQ8MSGQ8 API: This API lets users check their balance and send SMS messages. The service can be integrated into other applications. The API uses SOAP calls and responses are formatted in XML. The site is in Arabic and documentation is extremely limited.

NoSwearingNoSwearing API: NoSwearing is a curse-word dictionary/thesaurus. Enter a swear word or a string of words containing swear words into the filter and a cleaned-up translation is returned.

An API is available which will list "dirty words, censor dirty words, replace dirty words, and define dirty words." API access is on a limited basis. Requests for access can be made (please see contact email above). Public documentation is not available.

NSIDCNSIDC API: The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) supports research and provides datasets on Earth's cryosphere, or frozen areas, such as the polar ice caps and other frozen land and water. Data is available for topics such as snow and land ice, sea ice, glaciers and ice sheets, frozen ground, and more. More than 500 datasets are available, from both ground and satellite observations. A series of APIs are provided for accessing datasets and metadata.

OCLC Virtual International Authority FileOCLC Virtual International Authority File API: The Virtual International Authority File is a project from the OCLC Office of Research which brings together authority data on accepted forms of author names and work titles from 16 different authority files in 14 libraries worldwide. The web service provides a way to search and retrieve authority records providing authoritative versions of author names, subject headings, and resource titles in a variety of formats.

OnePageCRMOnePageCRM API: OnePageCRM is a sales management service and platform for small businesses. OnePageCRM allows users to manage their contacts and sales leads, create sales reports, and manage sales calendars and processes.

The OnePageCRM API allows developers to access and integrate the functionality of OnePageCRM with other applications. Some example API methods include managing contacts and contact information, creating and editing contact notes, and listing and editing actions by contacts.

Open Source Exchange Rates Open Source Exchange Rates API: The Open Source Exchange Rates API gives developers a way to access the rates that power currency conversion services. The API provides up-to-date, flexible and portable currency conversion data that can be used in any application, framework or language. The API uses JavaScript and responses are formatted in JSON.

OventusOventus API: The Oventus API provides web services for sending and receiving SMS, requesting location lookups for mobile devices, managing contacts, delivering reports, and other mobile-centric functionality. Oventus enables bulk SMS, multi-channel mass broadcasts, custom voice-messaging, and geo-location services using PageOne's messaging gateway.

Developers can integrate their applications or devices with Oventus services using REST or SOAP, though their SOAP services provide more functionality.

Oxford English DictionaryOxford English Dictionary API: The OED bills itself as the definitive record of the English language. The OED SRU service (search/retrieve via URL) provides a means to automate basic queries, using a standard syntax to represent queries, and a standard protocol for returning results. The API uses RESTful calls and responses are formatted in XML.

RCSB Protein Data BankRCSB Protein Data Bank API: The Protein Data Bank (PDB) archive is the single worldwide repository of information about the 3D structures of large biological molecules, including proteins and nucleic acids. It is managed by the Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics (RCSB). The RCSB PDB allows users to access data through one of two methods: Search services: to return a list of IDs (i.e. PDB IDs, chain IDs, ligand IDs), Fetch services: to return data given a ID. The API uses RESTful calls and responses are formatted in XML.

Redbridge DataShareRedbridge DataShare API: The London Borough of Redbridge, in following the UK Government's programme to expose more government data, has created DataShare. DataShare makes datasets in the following categories available: finance, environment, democracy, education, council information, property, and housing. A RESTful API exposes this data to developers in XML and JSON formats.

ReportItReportIt API: Allows websites, CRM systems, social media, mobile apps and other customer facing applications to submit reports of environmental or anti-social behaviour problems to government agencies through a common API without having to worry which agency should address the issues. Downloadable documentation explains access calls to submit trouble reports, which are routed to the correct agencies for response. Originally part of a now-defunct municipal information portal, the API is still supported for trouble reports across the UK.

REVOREVO API: REVO is a service for real estate agents to list their properties, send promotional emails, texts, and to social media sites, organize property information, and manage customer information.

The REVO API allows for integration into other applications and websites. Some example API methods include managing listing information, adding listings, and deleting listings. Public documentation is not available; API is included with account.

RPostRPost API: RPost offers registered email services for users to access legal electronic messaging and document services for proof, encryption, e-signatures, and high value collaboration across multiple web-connected devices. Developers can also use RPost's API for data input, feature selection, product delivery, intelligence reporting, and authentication. The API uses SOAP protocol and responses are formatted in XML.

SeismiSeismi API: Seismi is an earthquake data visualization project which is using publicly available data provided by USGS and transforming it to a more informative, human readable and visually interesting form. The API provides information on earthquakes including most recent, magnitude, count and date of earthquakes. It uses RESTful calls and responses are formatted in JSON.

SfaxSfax API: Sfax (Secure Fax) is a secure, cloud-based faxing service, particularly for healthcare providers and hospitals, as well as other industries that require secure faxing. Sfax is HIPAA compliant.

The Sfax API allows developers to integrate Sfax functionality into other applications. Some example API methods include sending faxes, managing contacts, managing sales information, and billing information. Shropshire CouncilShropshire Council API: The Shropshire Council website is the online portal for the Shropshire Council government. Access information about births, carbon emissions reduction, elected representatives, grants, local libraries, facts and figures, and much more. An API provides access to some services with plans to increase access to more in the future.

SMEStorage Multi CloudSMEStorage Multi Cloud API: SMEStorage provides a shared multi-cloud file system which is an entry point to multiple clouds. With their Open Cloud Platform, they sync file meta-data while the files stay on the origianl storage platform. The API offers the full functionality of the service in a RESTful interface and responses are formatted in XML. Libraries are also available in languages such as .NET, Ruby, PHP and PERL.

TendrilTendril API: Tendril creates energy usage measurement devices and analysis software. Their products are powered by Tendril Connect, a platform that creates a dialog between energy service providers and their customers. Tendril’s existing, published APIs are designed to determine energy usage and cost of energy usage information. Users must register for the developer program to gain access to the APIs and documentation.

Texas HoldemTexas Holdem API: With this API users can create a full Texas Holdem game, just create the graphic and associate it with the results. It has one method that allows users to get a ready-to-play full Texas Holdem match. Just choose how many players are going to play (2 to 22) and get all cards: 2 hidden cards for each player + 5 face up cards (flop, turn, river). The API uses an HTTP call and responses are formatted in JSON.

TransiCastTransiCast API: TransiCast is a public transportation data aggregation platform with a REST API that provides real-time feeds and service network data of North American transit agencies in a single, unified format. TransiCast offers API services for the San Francisco Bay, Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland, Toronto, Boston, Washington D.C. metro areas. Users can get stops, routes and next bus and train times. The API uses RESTful calls and responses are formatted in XML.

UK BISUK BIS API: The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) is a UK government sector supporting business and economic growth. BIS is aimed at driving growth through fostering competitive markets, educating consumers about their rights and consumer law, promoting employment relations, higher education and skills training, and more.

BIS offers an API for developers to use content from their website and other websites under the bis.gov.uk site, which include the Export Credits Guarantee Department, British Hallmarking Council, the Foresight Programme, Council for Science and Technology, Government Office for Science, UK Space Agency, National Measurement Office, and the UK Commission for Employment and Skills.

UK National Archives DiscoveryUK National Archives Discovery API: The UK National Archives is the government's national archive for England, Wales, and the United Kingdom. Holding over 11 million historical government and public records, the Archives provides an online Catalogue, containing searchable descriptions of these records and documents. The Discovery service is based on the Catalogue and will soon replace the search functions of the Catalogue. Discovery service includes an API for RESTful queries, returning responses in XML.

Union County NC GISUnion County NC GIS API: Framework that allows spatial analysis to be performed on GIS data from Union County, North Carolina, through simple HTTP requests. Methods create and execute spatial queries against a PostGIS database (spatially enabled database). Analysis results depend entirely on user input and response format preference. Sample Community Mapper application uses these services almost exclusively to perform spatial analysis and return relevant results to users.

UpsalesUpsales API: Upsales is a web based CRM that lets users keep track of clients and contacts, manage their sales team and analyze important KPIs in real-time. Upsales provides an API for accessing and manipulating the data in Upsales CRM. With the API developers can integrate business applications with Upsales CRM. Functionality includes accessing and mass importing data, create, add, change and delete clients, contacts, projects, orders, opportunities, activities, appointments, products and users. The API uses SOAP protocol and responses are in XML.

visitor.jsvisitor.js API: visitor.js is an application that allows website owners to personalize and customize their websites based on visitor information. Some examples of customization include greeting the customer in languages based on location, offering special deals based on referral search terms, and displaying different information for returning visitors.

The visitor.js API allows developers to integrate the functionality of visitor.js into other applications and websites. Some example API methods include retrieving visitor location and language, information about the current session, and which browser the visitor is using.

Vs30 map serverVs30 map server API: Part of The National Seismic Hazard Mapping Project, this USGS map-based service supports online seismic analysis. Uses topographic slope as a proxy for average shear-velocity to estimate predictions of seismic site conditions across a region, including ground-motions following a global earthquake. Helps to predict earthquake hazards for a general location based on local conditions.

Word Cloud MakerWord Cloud Maker API: Generate Word Clouds from blocks of text. Multi color and different sizes illustrate the frequency, and the "vibe" of the bigger text. Try it with blog posts, article text, speeches, tweet histories, emails, or any other written word. The API uses an HTTP Post call and returns are in JSON.

World AddressesWorld Addresses API: World Addresses is an address validation and data management solution for companies dealing with large amounts of customer mailing data. The API allows users to conduct searches to lookup address data using a number of parameters. It uses RESTful calls and responses are formatted in XML or JSON. Full documentation is available upon registration.

Thanks, Wendell, for listing the Edmunds APIs in your post. Is it possible to change the category of the APIs to “automotive” instead of “Database” and “Reference”? I think that will make it much easier for people to discover our APIs on you site.
