Car Locator Navigates its Way to Top Honors in Verizon Contest

Verizon LocationPower Your App, a mobile application development contest organized by Verizon Developer Center recently announced its winners. The contest invited developers to submit RIM Blackberry 5.0 and Android 2.2 mobile applications across different categories. The Grand Prize winner in the contest was Car Locator by Edward Kim.

The contest was open in 5 categories: Connections, Entertainment, Lifestyle, Business and Information. The final date for the submissions was December 17, 2010. Since then it went through 3 rounds of public voting to select a Grand Prize winner, a People’s Choice Winner and individual category winner. The winning applications would also be available from the Verizon Marketplace, in addition to marketing campaigns and being featured in the marketplace.

The Grand Prize Winner, Car Locator saves your location when you park and then help you locate and find it. Edward Kim, who developed the application walked away with a whopping $50,000, 200% of app revenue for the  first year and an all paid expenses trip to the recently held Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Car Locator was also the winner in the Lifestyle category.

The People’s Choice Winner was Color Connect, a neat application that lets you express your feelings via your phone’s wallpaper coupled with social features that let you unlock a special feeling in addition to donating to charity. Color Connect also won in the Connections category.

The other category winners were:  Call Control, a Blackberry application to block telemarketing, Smarter Alarm which wakes you up by reading out the weather, news and sports scores of your interest and droplat, a location based file sharing service. Take a look at the list of winners. The applications are also available in the V CAST Apps marketplace.

The Apple and Android Marketplaces are crowded with applications with new applications getting added at an unprecedented pace. It is a challenge to get your application noticed or featured in the Top Lists. Contests like this present a great opportunity to get your mobile application showcased to a wide audience.
