Battle It Out to be Crowned “King Of The Apps”

Romin Irani, February 15th, 2011

Mosso Cloud FilesDeveloper contests are the norm these days and most developers have a tough time deciding which one to take part in. How about a developer contest that is modeled almost like a duel, with the winner winning a championship belt, getting christened “King of the Apps” and giving you a chance to defend your title next year? If this sounds interesting, the Rackspace “King of the Apps” contest is for you.

The King of the Apps contest is simple. All you need to do is conceptualize and implement an application that utilizes the Cloud Files API.  Rackspace Cloud Files provides unlimited online storage for files and a content delivery network to serve that to your users. It has a RESTful API that you can use to programmatically manage saving your content and retrieving it. An example of using the service could be a TwitPic-like application where you store the photos on the Rackspace Cloud Files Network.

To qualify for the contest, you need to take a video of your working application and submit your entry via the registration form present at the King of the Apps Contest page. The last date for submission of the entries is March 3. A power packed team of judges will select the two best applications that will be invited to a showdown during the Lean Startup track at SXSW in Austin, Texas on March 12, 2011. The team of 5 judges are Stacey Higginbotham of GigaOm, Dave McClure of 500 Startups, Eric Reis creator of the Lean Startup methodology, and Rackers Robert Scoble and Bill Boebel,

The winner, aka “King,” takes home a $5000 cash prize, $5000 in Rackspace Cloud credit, time with the panel of judges and a championship belt. Since this looks like a yearly contest, the King will get an automatic chance to defend his/her title at the next future showdown.

So if you have an application idea using the Cloud Files API, get set to code and challenge the world for the title of “King of the Apps.” May the best app win!
