Already this week we had 17 new APIs added to our API directory including a Twitter utility, mobile tagging service, an SMS messaging service, local deals aggregator, cloud infrastructure management service, journal search service and multi-party video chat service. Below is more detail on each of these new APIs.
Google App Engine, the PaaS offering from Google has a new release version 1.4.0 of its SDK, paying special attention to requests that developers have been putting it for a long time and removing limitations that received a wave of negative reactions. The new SDK addresses some of those concerns head on.
MyGengo, a Language Translation service provider, has introduced a unique developer contest. The bounty system invites developers to build plugins for its translation services in a variety of products, thus enabling it to get a foot into various products and allowing the developers to earn some cool cash.
Tynt, an innovative service that provides you more insight into how user engage with your web site content, now provides a Tynt API to access the analytics. The company and is expecting users to develop interesting mobile and web mashup applications with it.
The Cloudstock Hackathon that we’re co-hosting is today. Registration is open and the prizes are worth signing up and giving it a go. Best in Show takes home a MacBook Pro for each team member. And there are great API-specific prizes, such as Amazon Kindles and O’Reilly books for the best use of the voice and SMS Twilio API.
Last month saw the first-ever “Small Business Saturday” (at least according to American Express, the initiative’s sponsor). Small business get plenty of attention in terms of their finances, but what about their web application needs? The Small Business Web is “a directory of web apps to help small business bloom and grow.” The site was founded about two years ago by FreshBooks (invoicing), MailChimp (email marketing), BatchBlue (customer relationship management), Outright (accounting), and Shoeboxed (receipt management). It now lists dozens of applications across several more categories.
This week we added a whopping 55 new APIs to our API directory, making up for the prior holiday week. The new APIs include a handful of wine services, four email services, five SMS platforms, location-based marketing for retailers, a cloud hosting platform, a customer service chat platform and many more. This past week 18 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 24 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include Beer Mapping, Google O3D, Tiny GeoCoder and Yolink. The most often used APIs this week are Facebook, Google Maps and Tropo. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Search (5 APIs, 6 mashups), Mapping (3 APIs, 8 mashups) and Social (3 APIs, 9 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:
API providers and developers are making their choice quite clear when it comes to choosing between XML and JSON. A nearly unanimous choice seems to be JSON. Several API providers, including Twitter, have either stopped supporting the XML format or are even introducing newer versions of their API with only JSON support. In our ProgrammableWeb API directory, JSON seems to be the winner.
Organizations continue to grapple with making a choice between building their own data center or using a public cloud infrastructure. It sure helps to learn about successful case studies of mainstream companies making a successful move to the cloud. Netflix, with a popular Netflix API of its own, has turned to a cloud provider to scale many areas of the video streaming company’s service.
