The URL shortening services are increasing by the day. Big names like Facebook and Google have entered the game that has been dominated by other services, chief among them being bit.ly. Announcing its second API contest, bit.ly is inviting developers to make innovative use of its bit.ly API and offering some exciting prizes. The range of applications in which you can employ a URL shortening service is limitless and bit.ly is looking for the best entries to showcase its utility.

The API contest announcement post provides application ideas in case you are looking for inspiration. Suggestions include mobile applications that use the bit.ly API to share and track bit.ly codes, a Wordpress plugin to turn all the links on a page into bit.ly links and track them.

Bit.ly recently announced support for QR codes, a few days after Google did the same. Creating a useful application that employs bit.ly QR Code support might just be the kind of application that bit.ly is looking for, to showcase its API.

The winners of the contest will be announced at the hackabit Hackaton, on November 17, 2010. The top prize is a Makerbot Thing-O-Matic 3D Printer. All contest entries should be submitted to contest@bit.ly.
