Sunlight Government App Hackathon Coming To 7+ Cities

Adam DuVander, November 24th, 2009

Sunlight LabsThe Great American Hackathon from Sunlight Labs is coming December 12-13. Unlike most API-hacking events, this one is taking place all over the United States, in at least seven cities. The idea is to encourage developers to work together and jump start work on projects using government data.

Great American Hackathon

This is another of many projects from the Sunlight Foundation aimed to open America’s government. There have been two Apps for America contests this year. We previously covered the winners of the first round and finalists in the second. Past winners of those contests include Filibusted tracks the frequency at which senators try to stall legislation through filibustering.

If you can’t make it to a hackathon, the folks at Sunlight want you to hold your own:

What we need right now is for you to create events across America–hold one in your home, office, or wherever else you’d like to do it, and get developers together to work on the ideas and projects of our community. Or if there’s nothing in there that you think you can contribute to, you can always add your own into the mix.

There are already events scheduled in seven cities, including:

  • Washington, DC
  • New York, NY
  • Arlington, VA
  • Evanston, IL
  • Troy, NY
  • Minneapolis, MN
  • Philadelphia, PA

You can find more detailed information about each event on the Hackathon home page.
