Google’s Jeff Scudder has a new post on the Google AJAX APIs blog that details how CSS styling can be used in conjunction with the Google AJAX Search API (our Google AJAX Search API Profile) to customize the look and feel of the search interface and search results. Though it may not seem that important, the aesthetics of your site’s search interface, and the way the results are displayed, are both important elements that can influence the experience of your site’s visitors.

Live video startup Justin.tv has released a comprehensive API for consuming, organizing and creating content on its site. With it, the company hopes to be a platform for live video.

Popular URL shortening site tr.im has quickly shuttered its service due to lack of revenue potential (our tr.im API profile). One of tr.im’s creators, Eric Woodward, also referenced Twitter’s choice of bit.ly (our bit.ly API profile) as a default URL shortener as factoring into their decision.
This past week 20 new mashups were add to our mashup directory and 23 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include DandyId, Google Gears Geolocation, ikregeer.nl, ShopStyle, Summize Twitter Search, TwitterCounter, and VideoSurf. The most often used APIs this week are Flickr, Google Maps, and Twitter. Overall, the most active types of APIs were: mapping (7 mashups), news (6 mashups), and video (5 mashups). The news of Yahoo’s deal to use Microsoft’s Bing for search at best has some standing vigil over BOSS and SearchMonkey (our profiles of the BOSS API and Yahoo Search API). At worst, many are already calling the services dead.
In another example of the ongoing battle over copyright, LyricWiki, the popular song lyric index and wiki, recently announced a major change that significantly reduces the functionality of its API (our LyricWiki API Profile). Although the API has not been shut down completely, the recent modification removes the core functionality that allows users to retrieve song lyrics.
There’s no doubt that Twitter mashups are very popular. Programmable Web listed 120 in February, 200 in June and 238 Twitter mashups today.
You may soon be able to “Digg This” from within your applications. The social news site’s API (our Digg API profile) has long been able to list stories and other data. Now it’s looking to let developers add content programmatically.
