Expect a mash pit, not a mosh pit, at this weekend’s Music Hack Day in London. Over 200 people will come together from the UK and across Europe for what the organizers call “the best industry to hack on, with the cleanest APIs and the most enjoyable content.”
The event will mix independent developers with cutting edge music services working together. Companies attending the event include Last.fm (our Last.fm API profile) and BBC Music (our BBC Music API profile), among others.
Several of the companies attending plan to launch or expand API offerings at Music Hack Day. Songkick founder Ian Hogarth says he is “excited to see how our rich dataset on gigs and live music can be used in new and innovative ways.” Songkick will be previewing their new API this weekend (our new Songkick API profile).
Web services based around music often face legal difficulties due to licensing restrictions. Legal digital music APIs help bridge the gulf between innovation and copyright issues. Music mashups have long been in the top ten types of mashups on Programmable Web. We list 58 music APIs and hundreds of music mashups and applications.
There is no central event blog, but you can follow Music Hack Day on Twitter for updates. They have planned final presentations for Sunday, so expect some complete applications to come from this weekend of hacking.
