Maponics Releases API for Neighborhood, ZIP Code, and Carrier Route Boundaries

Andres Ferrate, April 17th, 2009

Spatial data provider Maponics has released a new API that provides developers with access to several boundary data sets. Previously available as a beta release in February, the Maponics Spatial API (our Maponics API profile) provides access to carrier route, ZIP Code and neighborhood data for the United States.

Maponics Mashup

The neighborhood boundaries data set includes over 60,000 neighborhoods in over 2,000 cities. The neighborhood boundaries API seems similar to the Urban Mapping API we covered last year, although a key differentiator is that the Maponics API includes the actual boundaries (something that the Urban Mapping API does not yet provide).

According to the Maponics Blog, the API can be used for several types of queries, including:

  • What is the neighborhood, ZIP Code or carrier route boundary (ready to map latitude and longitude points) surrounding a given address or location point?
  • What is the list of neighborhoods, ZIP Codes or carrier routes closest to a location point?
  • In what neighborhood, ZIP Code or carrier route does a specific latitude and longitude point or typed address fall?
  • What is the list of neighborhoods, ZIP Codes or carrier routes that fall within a city, state or radius?

Maponics has set up a developer portal that includes documentation, FAQs, and a neighborhood boundaries mashup that allows users to find a neighborhood boundary by address.

This is a nice addition to our regularly growing list of mapping APIs, and we look forward to seeing how this new data will be integrated into existing and future map mashups.
