AOL has announced that its MapQuest service now supports OpenID logins as part of the new My MapQuest capability. AOL has long been an OpenID innovator. As AOL’s George Fletcher reminds us, AOL was one of the earliest OpenID providers.
My MapQuest’s OpenID support has drawn praise since its announcement. The OpenID blog noted:
AOL has just launched My MapQuest which sports a great new OpenID login experience… AOL is the first large internet company to support OpenID sign in on a non-blogging product and while they don’t yet let you use your OpenID to sign in on AOL.com, it’s seems clear that is the direction they’re headed.
In addition, AOL has announced support for OpenID SREG, the Simple Registration Extension, which aim to improve interoperability and user experience around OpenID:
In order to work on these industry relevant issues, and also provide access to user data attributes on AOL OpenIDs, AOL has released “preview” support for SREG 1.0. The supported fields at this time include email, nickname, country, date of birth, gender, and postal code. Note that this support is SREG 1.0 compliant and based on our OpenID 1.1 Provider implementation. An upgrade to OpenID 2.0 and AX is planned for the future.
