19 Video APIs

John Musser, September 20th, 2007

Online video is hot and so are online video APIs. This week we added the Vimeo API to our listings and this brings the total number of APIs at ProgrammableWeb to 19 (see them all here). The king of these is still the YouTube API but for developers looking to integrate and aggregate video content there are lots of choices. Some are read-only, some read-write, some are purely video-centric while others are video-related like those facilitating general media management, video search, video reference, or video messaging. Here’s a rundown of the competition:

You don’t have blip.tv’s api at:

http://wiki.blip.tv/index.php/Blip.tv_API

You’ll be asked to login but the credentials are right in the alert box.

One big problem for YouTube is that Commercial use is prohibited. You cannot even put up a website that shows banner ads next to stuff you show from the YouTube repository.

This renders it useless IMHO. There are a few people who would give a considerable effort just for the glory for free… :)
