7 Online Storage APIs

The number of web service APIs for data storage in the cloud keeps growing. The latest entry comes from startup Nirvanix and you can see our Nirvanix API profile here. Nirvanix describes their storage services as an Internet Media File System (IMFS). It’s a fairly rich API with nearly 75 pages of documentation. Their API comes with reference applications (always a good idea for API providers) in PHP, Perl, Java, C# and interestingly Adobe AIR.
If you check our list of APIs tagged “storage” you can see there’s at least seven available at the moment. Your choices include:
With offerings from Microsoft and Google due any time now, this will be become an even more heated market.

Nirvanix will compete with Amazon S3, which is great to see as this is a growing market. They offer alot of features that will also benefit web developers.

Fair warning about Nirvanix. Nirvanix = MediaMax. Same president and everything, it is a spin-off of the same company.
Read about the way they’ve treated their customers over the last year, and then decide if you want to trust them with your data.

DriveHQ has a complete API that includes account creation/editing, create/edit/list/delete folders, create/edit/delete/list files, upload and download files, share files/folders with different levels of permission, Group account management APIs, etc.
You can use DriveHQ’s web HTTP based API, or you can use DriveHQ client software SDK, or you can use regular FTP protocol to access DriveHQ Online Storage and backup system. It is easier than any other APIs.

There’s quite a few storage sites available now. I would see a complete list of free online storage sites and compare features and options before I chose a service. http://www.freeonlinestoragesites.com posts a good review of the top sites.
