The Web 2.0 Expo keynote yesterday from Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos focused entirely on the family of Amazon Web Services APIs including S3 storage API, EC2 compute services, and the Simple Queue Service. While Jeff wouldn’t disclose which, he acknowledged they are working on other APIs in the ‘web infrastructure stack’.
In particular he revealed some interesting metrics about S3 volume:
As an example of the benefits of these infrastructure services, he cited Blue Origin, a company designing sub-orbital spacecraft that Bezos himself is behind. They use Amazon’s infrastructure APIs and earlier this year their web site needed to handle a huge spike of millions of page and video requests for a few days due to slashdot-type effects. By using Amazon.com web services they were able to dynamically meet that brief, large spike in demand for only a few hundred dollars.
