What happens when you offer cash prizes to developers in order to create telephony-based mashups? We found out last week at the O’Reilly ETel Emerging Telephony Conference where they and StrikeIron announced the winners in the O’Reilly Media and StrikeIron Telephony Mashup Contest (see our previous coverage). And as it turns-out, there were some very good entries. Who won? You can now see the top three in our directory:

• First Place : After Hours Doctor’s Office is a clever and useful mashup that takes the Amazon Mechanical Turk API and the Strikeiron SMS API to transcribe office voice mail left by patients for doctors into text and then sends them via SMS to the doctor. By Thomas Howe, who has also put the presentation slides and other details up on a Backpack page.

• Second Place: RoboCal uses the 30 Boxes API, the Google Calendar API, and Voxeo to enable users to listen to events listed in 30 Boxes or Google Calendar. Can also save voice messages to your calendar. By Ted Gilchrist of Botcast Network.

• Third Place: FishLign: Demo social app using StrikeIron Driving Directions and LignUp Recording, TTS and Personalization to perform Click2Call and allowing community members to receive voice messages without disclosing their actual phone numbers and advertisers can offer voice callbacks to site visitors. By Claire Umeda and Dharmesh Desai of LignUp.
