New APIs: Semantics, Pictures and Phones

John Musser, October 10th, 2006

ClearForestThere has been a new flurry of APIs added here covering a range of interesting mashup possibilities. The overall total is now 289 APIs: click here for the whole list. As for the latest entries, this sampling gives some of the highlights:

  • ClearForest Semantic Web Services-1 API: Last week ClearForest launched a new hosted API based on their decade of enterprise experience with natural language processing (NLP), text extraction and event detection software. It is an interesting API: you submit text to the service where it performs semantic analysis to identify people, organizations, and geographies. It then returns those results to you as XML or a web page. In support of this new API they’ve launched the Semantic Web Service Mashup Contest with a first prize of $2,000 and have also joined us as a ProgrammableWeb sponsor.
  • AOL Pictures API: Access the data and images from the AOL Pictures online photo service. Straightforward JSON-based API.
  • US Yellow Pages API: If your application needs to incorporate up-to-date business data like address, phone number, and web site address this service might do the trick. It’s a very large database with over 17 million businesses listed.
