Although last week’s NY Times story on mashups shows that Google Maps is still the map mindshare darling, it doesn’t mean folks aren’t doing interesting things other mapping platforms such as and Yahoo!’s and Microsoft’s. Courtesy of the Yahoo! Maps API developers site, here’s a sampling of what’s folks are building on that platform:
Mashup of [...]
Welcome to ProgrammableWeb v1.1. On the surface this site may not look much different, but on closer inspection there’s a variety of new features:
Tags: Was bound to happen. Only surprise is how long it took me to get them to work right ;-). All links and APIs can be tagged. Both the syntax and semantics [...]
Mashmap: Slick interface for finding movies anywhere in US via this Google Maps mashup. Pick a geographic region, then browse by Theater or Movie. (The UI has some kinks to work-out, like overlapping windows at times.)
New York in the Movies: Lets you see where scenes from well known movies have been shot in NYC.
Over the past few weeks I’ve snuck some minor new features onto this site. The latest is the ‘Related Links’ section that is now at the bottom of each API’s detail page. For an example look at the bottom of the Google Maps summary. Many of these links have been contributed by readers so please [...]
Thursday’s New York Times covered the maps-mashing phenomenon in an article entitled “A Journey to a Thousand Maps Begins With an Open Code”. The core of the story is not new to readers here but it does cover a number of interesting examples (most or all of which can be found at the excellent [...]
I’m happy to announce that ProgrammableWeb has joined the Web 2.0 Workgroup.
What is it? From the homepage: “The Web 2.0 Workgroup is a network network of premium weblogs that write content exclusively about the new generation of the Web…If you like any one of the affiliated blogs, we guarantee you’ll like the rest too!” [...]
Seattle Movie Finder: Helps you find movies in the Seattle-area by using this early application of the MSN Virtual Earth API. [via Dare Obasanjo]
GymPost.com: Is a fitness facility locator that shows gyms, athletic clubs, pilates studios, and other similar places on a Google Map. [via Ryan MacGregor]
WeReporters have created a couple of interesting mashups:
GeoNews: Track news as it happens. Google Maps + Google News RSS feed.
Visual Traceroute: See how packets travel from one computer to another by pasting your traceroute output here (plots the path onto a Google Map).
Note these can be slow from the US.
One of the things I haven’t added to the API database has been what might be classified as Desktop Widgets or other client-dependent APIs. Examples of these include:
Google Desktop Search
Serence Klip
Yahoo Konfabulator
Yahoo Music Engine
MSN Messenger Activity SDK
Skype
Most use online data but they require an OS-specific desktop install as opposed to being pure web-based platforms. [...]
A couple of recent additions to the API database:
Last.fm: Provides music playlist management. Simple REST-like api returns plain text, XML or RSS data. It’s powered by the Audioscrobbler.net API. For more see here.
Tagyu: A ‘tag recommendation engine’. From the site: “Tagyu compares what you’re writing to what other people around the web are writing. [...]
